Matavitatau meets with Fr. Eugenio Nembrini and the “Squares”
Auditorium Antico Istituto Sant’Anna, Perugia
Who are the “Squares”?
The “Squares” is a group started by Fr. Eugenio Nembrini during the lockdown, and gets its name from the computer tiles in which each participant’s image was seen during video meetings.
Originally conceived as a way to allow the sick to follow daily Mass online, the experience became much more than that. There are now many believers and non-believers who participate in the group, and come from all over Italy and other European countries, but its reach extends far beyond these borders: there are participants from Kazakhstan and other parts of Asia, as well as Uganda. Some live with debilitating and serious illness: tumors, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimers, depression, severe heart problems, congenital defects; others are family members who help the sufferers. They meet every day to tell their stories, offer each other company, pray for each other, and to celebrate the Mass.
What is Matavitatau?
Matavitatau is an Umbrian cultural association founded in 2006 to promote high-quality cultural experiences. Our dialogues are shaped by events centred around history, archaeology, gastronomy, and sociology (with an emphasis on ancient Rome), promoting reflections on the relationship between the past and the present.
Matavitatau’s goals are to study the roots of Italian culture in order to understand our past and thereby our present in a personal and individual context, helping us appreciate our own contributions to the cultural landscape.
The mutual sharing, friendship, and active participation that have been experienced by its members in the 20 years of Matavitatau’s existence have proven to be a powerful way to provide social cohesion and learning.
Why This Meeting?
The live witness of the Squares is a natural fit with the cultural and social vision of Matavitatau: both of these groups demonstrate how memories of the past combined with our current reality, even when at our weakest, can become a way to find company, growth, and hope.
